demonstrating the HMV Model 114

I have been asked recently about my Model 114 portable and so i dug it out , brushed off the dust and answered the questions - and since i had it out i decided to play some records and wan't pleased by the performance - i just couldn't understand what was wrong

I checked the horn had no instructions - no, then tried the machine with a Meltrope 3 and it was fine and a good sound so it was the soundbox after all - i removed the rubber back and replaced that which made a great difference but what was really wrong were the pivots and after adjusting them the whole sound from the 114 was transformed - it is advisable when testing such machines to use records of the period rather than some crummy 20's recording as i did initially !

Some of the Savoy orpheans records can be rather thinly recorded and are not suitable for full range sound testing

Here's HArry Davidson playing a couple of Dances and the sound is just incredible

The first piece you picked for your test brought to mind the Norman Wisdom and Joyce Grenfell version:

- the best of three versions found by Google, but still not as good as yours!
