Florence Foster Jenkins - Neglected Diva ?

Florence Foster Jenkins - Neglected Diva ?

Postby Gmemg » 20 Jun 2014, 09:07

I had a very interesting conversation with an "expert" on Opera and an Oxford "Don" toboot ! (and i shows that word can be misapplied) He stated that :

"Expert" : "Florence Foster Jenkins is a Neglected Dive who has been misjudged by History"

Me : "Err, how is that possible ?"

"Expert" "Well by reading contemporary accounts of her appearance at Carnegie Hal, they are very complimentary "

Me : "that's because the Audience were all her FRIENDS - and she wasn't invited to sing SHE hired the hall "

"Expert" : "Even so, we must accept she was much better than average"

Me "Have you heard any of her records ?"

"Expert" : "Well, No but she didn't make any recordings did she ! "

Me : "Oh yes she did ! would you like to hear one on the Expert Senior ?

Expert : "Well, i suppose so , but only to confirm my view "

The record was played .....................and he left !

Here is "The Queen of the Night's Aria" from Der Zauberflote

What do you think ?

I lasted about one minute

I've often heard the term 'strangled cat', but never heard anything that suited the description until now.

Your 'expert' must have been mortified!

that is just unbelievable, did her friends actually stay in the hall for that row?

I particularly love the clucking hen impressions I was going to say near the end but what i really mean is just about everywhere. what a din!

Do you remember where the record came from/ did it come in a collection of truely awful opera records or....

did you buy it?

No, that's not unique - She paid for the Carnegie Hall and made records in a recording studio which she paid for and then her friends bought - that one was in a box of mixed records from an Auction many years ago and i was astonished to find it

i had heard her singing on LP so knew what she was like as a singer but have to give her 100% for effort and after all she paid for everything and invited her audiences and didn't care about reviews or the opinion of others - so unlike the rubbish foisted on us to - day by "popular" music

she did make more recordings one of which was written for her "serenata Mexicala"

One comment asked if she was singing in Aztec !

and "Adele's Laughing song "

One of her quotes is : "People say i can't sing but ehy can't say i didn't sing "

How many of us know elderly people who think they can song/dance/run gramophone Societies...........but whom , to others, appear and perhaps are incompetant, pig - headed, cretinous, vain and out of touch

there were others however, who thought they could sing maybe not so extreme as the above and they can be found on CD
