"King of Light Music" Eric Coates on Radio 4 Ex

This was a very interesting programme - some would no doubt quibble with the title but , whatever the truth the Music of Eric Coates sums up the optimism of the 1930 's, the Grim deterministic Patriotism of the War years and the renewed optimism of the 1950's. I doubt there are few - even now who don't know some of Coates' music

I'm not going to argue with that, the king of light music. Ketelby is the only one who comes close, in my opinion.
Going on the ministry now but will enjoy listening to this later, wish I'd known it was on!

I really can't which i prefer most...................in fact i'd rank them as equals with Ketelbey as the slightly earlier (Delius, relaxed) style of music and Coates as the slightly later (Jazzy, industrial/busy)

i loved the story his son told of him

"Not composing in the morning until he was fully dressed with a tie & Tweed jacket"

that really sums up his music
