50 years of Chitty Chitty Bang bang Radio 4

I heard this programme yesterday whilst Driving and had to pull into a lay by to listen properly !

It'a amazingly 50 years Since the Film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was released - it seems like yesterday and still it remains timeless - many will know it was taken from a book by Ian Fleming and that the car was based on "Chitty Bang Bang" a car (actually 4 Cars ) with the nickname Built & raced (At Brooklands) by Count Zborowksi in the early 1920's which were fitted with Aero engines

The truth turns out to be rather different - in the Book the Car does indeed fly but initially only over a traffic Jam and it's inventor "Caractacus Potts" is really called "Captain Pott" they DON'T Go anywhere near "Vulgaria" but go for a day out to Northern France , there's no "Truly Scruptious" as Captain Pott is a Married man - the film Story was written by Roald Dahl who added ALL the familiar elements

and as for the name of the Car - well it comes from a Great War slang term which i won't repeat but would have been well known at the time !

This is a programme well worth listening to

Count Zborowksi
